Yenda Public School Environmental Program Go Green Days Each term there are two Go Green days to encourage the school population to be aware of their impact on the planet. Students try to be the most environmentally friendly person for the day. They bring an environmentally friendly lunch with as little packaging as possible, they check lights are turned off etc. There is a prize for the best class. One Go Green day is announced so the students can make a concerted effort, the other day is unannounced to try and keep the students on their toes and to encourage a lifestyle commitment to being “green” Nest boxes have been installed in the larger trees in the school grounds. Students can identify and study the occupant birds. They have taken a responsible ownership attitude to the birds as a result. Chooks Students place all their food waste into bins at recess and lunch There is a roster of the year 4/5 students to feed the lunch scraps to the chooks. This eliminates food waste going to the tip and causing greenhouse gas as it decomposes Bright sparks Kindergarten are the “Bright sparks” who police the classrooms checking which ones have lights on at lunch time. They monitor the results and can use the information in their lessons. Student Gardens Initiated by the bus students. They have set up and tend their garden plot near the bus stop while waiting for their buses. They bring in cuttings and plants from home and scavenge for any equipment that they need.
