9. Adaptations

The special shapes and parts invertebrates and other animals and plants have to help them live in their environments are called adaptations.

What does the butterfly have so it can fly? What does the spider have to kill it's victims? What does the snail have to protect it? What does the centipede have so it can crawl through leaves?

A closer look through the microscope.

The body and wings of butterflies and moths are covered in scales. Small hairs on the wing of a fly. They can beat their wings 200 times per second. The compound eye of a fly can have up to
4 000 lenses. Very good for detecting movement.
The leg of a fly is covered in sensory hairs. Flies can taste with their feet when they land on things.
